- 265 is the nominal section width in millimetres.
- 70 is the aspect ratio: the sidewall height is 70% of the nominal section width.
- R means radial construction.
- 16 is the wheel/rim diameter in inches.
The service description comes next
The size is often followed by a load index and speed symbol. Those also matter. Commercial tyres may include additional markings such as C, LT, load range or ply rating depending on the system used.
Why “close enough” is risky
A different profile can change the tyre’s overall diameter even if the width and rim diameter look similar. That can affect clearance, speedometer reading and vehicle behaviour.
